  Also, I should clarify, was tired and in a hurry when I wrote the above post - when I said it is not perfect, I mean that it does what it does really well but there are more features that would be great to have. One is multi-currency which was a big thing for me and yay... they are working on that at the moment and should be done in a few weeks.

  Currently attempting to help a client locate a shopping cart that can do the following:

  Reliable!!!

  Easily Updateable from a spreadsheet

  Downloadable sales in spreadsheet form – ideally in a format that can be imported by Quickbooks.

  With Multiple level categories, with the ability to put items in more than one category.

  With the ability to enter a html link to the manufacturer

  Works in US dollars – calculates tax

  Ability to limit access to those who will pick up their order.

  With the ability to turn off inventory control (we are currently doing “group” orders on a monthly basis)

  Ideally the cart doesn’t empty when they logout, so they can come back and continue shopping. This is a pet peeve of mine with many shopping carts.

  Ability to add required fields to the shopping cart – such as a field to indicate who will pick up their order if they are having a friend do it.

  Ability to email those who order – when order has arrived .

  Any recommendations and links to shopping carts will be welcomed. I have found carts that work with WP that do only partial of this and partial of that... but nothing that I could find that would do all of the...

PayPal Shopping Cart for Wordpress

Now installing this PayPal Shopping Cart for Wordpress was not without complication. There was some alteration necessary for clean, easy to use function. There is an active support forum for this, however, which made it easier. It is a nicer, easier way to approach using WP to sell products on the internet versus having to use custom fields and linking to a PayPal checkout for Wordpress.

  I've found this plugin to be pretty solid, but have found an error or two I think should be resolved as I assume it would effect a lot of people using the plugin.

  I was using WordPress v2.8.6 and WP e-Commerce plugin v3.7.5.1. I upgraded to WordPress v2.9.2 and WP e-Commerce plugin v3.7.5.3 in hope that the issues would be resolved - no such luck.

  I appreciate the fact that the developers of the WP e-Commerce plugin have put in much effort to get it to where it is now, and with the community's help we can make it even better :)

  So here's my scenario:

  1. You're in the shop within the website, you select the product you want to purchase, and proceed to the checkout. (Keeping in mind this product is one of a kind, i.e. there's only one in stock.)
  2. You fill in all your appropriate details and select "PayPal" as the Payment Gateway, and click the "Make Purchase" button. (The PayPal Express Checkout is being used here, but should be beside the point.)
  3. You're redirected to the PayPal landing page where you can login with your according PayPal buyer account to continue, or you can choose to proceed without a PayPal account and...

In the installation process this week for a client…encountered some little tips that might help the installation process go a little bit easier for you.

No WPMU Website Defined on This Host

Firstly, a very common error message is No WPMU Website Defined on this Host.  Unfortunately, the codex is not completely clear on the fact that the MU autoinstaller has a function built into that created a wp-config file.  Even though the distribution package comes with a wp-config-sample.php as regular Wordpress does, it is not the same installation process to change the parameters in this file and rename it.  The same thing goes for the .htaccess file.  There is a .htaccess.dist that comes with the package.  Although both of these files are in the zip or tar.gz package, neither is actually utilized.  That’s right…you should have neither file, wp-config.php or an .htaccess file, these will be autocreated by the install.  You will be guided through entering your SQL details, logins, user, database, etc.

Installing WPMU in Root Directory

You might find that there are some issues with your host and the autoinstaller when attempting installing WPMU in the Root Directory.  The codex and searches don’t provide a ton of information on this.  Since the write properties of the directory that contain the WPMU files must be writeable, there are some issues with write permissions being blocked out and prohibited from change to allow for the write access.  This is the only way for the WPMU auto-install to work.  The easiest solution, obviously, if you encounter this, which you likely will, is to install MU in a directory, which can easily be changed in most cases for permissions via FTP.  Still looking for a good solution for installing WPMU in the root directory.  This had been done on a project, but it has been several years, so the notes seemed to have vanished.  It did work fine when installed in a directory however, which worked fine for the clients application due to the need for ability to enhance the main design of the site quite a bit which might be more limited with Multi-User.

Wildcard DNS, Subdirectory, WPMU Hosting

You will need to decide whether you want to utilize the subdirectory method or the folder option.  The difference is how the new blog sites created by users are accessed once a user is done creating a blog with WPMU.  Your host will have to activate Wildcard DNS should you wish the following type of address for a blog (if you have your own server, this article explains how to setup Wildcard DNS on Apache, otherwise, your host would do it):

musubdomain.domain.com

With a folder access installed in a separate directory, you would get something like this, which does not require the DNS Wildcard.  Some hosts may not support this.  The host, asmallorange.com which is listed on our Wordpress Hosting Page does.

  Forget about wildchar dns.
  This is a simple trick to configure this.

  Create a subdomain
  *.yourdomainname and point it to the folder which the yourdomainname points to.

  Issue is solved.
  for eg : If yourdomainname.com points to folder
  public_html then create subdomain *.yourdomainname and point it to public_html

  this trick works with shared web hosting. I just now configured it in computerkid.info

Professional WPMU Installation, Hosting, MU Developer Install

As always, we are happy to direct you where to go for WPMU hosting or for a Professional WPMU Install.

The Revolution Wordpress Themes are very powerful themes.  They include a grouping of editable php files to customize.  Configuring these templates is not easy, but can be well worth it for someone with above average technical ability…or a website owner who has access to technical support for customizing web themes and blog templates.

The Revolution City Template features a tabbed image function that lets you cycle through 6 different pictures utilizing a Flickr plugin.  Although a little cumbersome utilizing the custom fields option…it will import a picture into the home page of the blog or website so that it can be attached to summary text…which is similar to an excerpt…however…shorter.  The sidebar support is pretty flexible as there is one master and two sub sidebars.

Revolution Sports is an older theme…however, nice.  It uses a Post Limit Plugin to do what Revolution City does via the WP files…so this can cause technical issues swapping from theme to theme if you are working with multiples.  Without customization, this template gives a more masculine look.  We also found it to behave friendlier with Javascript.

These can cause problems for those who are not used to editing php files…but the designer does offer some tutorial videos which come in quite handy.  All in all…these are highly configurable, which is very flexible.  They are great for a news type site or magazine.  Keep in mind that these are not free themes…they costs about $79.00 or come in multi-license packs…which the developer sells.

The other themes are Revolution News, Magazine, Real Estate, Revolution Pro Media and Revolution Tech.
