Very pleased to announce much success with a new Wordpress eCommerce plugin, WP e-Commerce. In development for a client, we found this e-commerce plugin script to be very highly configurable and the Wordpress shopping cart to be smooth and easy!

Offering a merge to PayPal for business or regular PayPal, the plugin offers an interactive shopping cart, product photos, product descriptions, the ability to easily place specials on the homepage, a way to keep track of stock as it gets sold, a full exportable sales log file, search engine friendly urls and categories and much, much more! See the WP e-Commerce site we’ve developed here.

There was some alteration necessary for clean, easy to use function. There is an active support forum for this, however, which made it easier. It is a nicer, easier way to approach using WP to sell products on the internet versus having to use custom fields and linking to a PayPal checkout for Wordpress.

The full text post for WPMU Installation Problems is located here

In the installation process this week for a client…encountered some little tips that might help the installation process go a little bit easier for you.

No WPMU Website Defined on This Host

Firstly, a very common error message is No WPMU Website Defined on this Host. Unfortunately, the codex is not completely clear on the fact that the MU autoinstaller has a function built into that created a wp-config file. Even though the distribution package comes with a wp-config-sample.php as regular Wordpress does, it is not the same installation process to change the parameters in this file and rename it. The same thing goes for the .htaccess file. There is a .htaccess.dist that comes with the package. Although both of these files are in the zip or tar.gz package, neither is actually utilized. That’s right…you should have neither file, wp-config.php or an .htaccess file, these will be autocreated by the install. You will be guided through entering your SQL details, logins, user, database, etc.

Installing WPMU in Root Directory

You might find that there are some issues with your host and the autoinstaller when attempting installing WPMU in the Root Directory. The codex and searches don’t provide a ton of information on this. Since the write properties of the directory that contain the WPMU files must be writeable, there are some issues with write permissions being blocked out and prohibited from change to allow for the write access. This is the only way for the WPMU auto-install to work. The easiest solution, obviously, if you encounter this, which you likely will, is to install MU in a directory, which can easily be changed in most cases for permissions via FTP. Still looking for a good solution for installing WPMU in the root directory. This had been done on a project, but it has been several years, so the notes seemed to have vanished. It did work fine when installed in a directory however, which worked fine for the clients application due to the need for ability to enhance the main design of the site quite a bit which might be more limited with Multi-User.

Wildcard DNS, Subdirectory, WPMU Hosting

You will need to decide whether you want to utilize the subdirectory method or the folder option. The difference is how the new blog sites created by users are accessed once a user is done creating a blog with WPMU. Your host will have to activate Wildcard DNS should you wish the following type of address for a blog (if you have your own server, this article explains how to setup Wildcard DNS on Apache, otherwise, your host would do it):

musubdomain.domain.com

With a folder access installed in a separate directory, you would get something like this, which does not require the DNS Wildcard. Some hosts may not support this. The host, asmallorange.com which is listed on our Wordpress Hosting Page does.

Hi friends! Sorry for my bad english, i don't speak very well.. ;)

I installed the WPMU in one specific server, and now, i need to associate other DNS to the same blogs.
I has a big problem: using VirtualHost, the actual DNS was directed to a physical address (i.e /opt/blogs/wwwroot). My MU was configured with sub-directories, and this is the problem! Example:
my old address - clients.soluttia.com/wpmu/MYBLOG
my new address - www.newestblogs.com/MYBLOG
When i enter in "www.newestblogs.com", it's ok. But in any other subdirectory, the problems start.

The command rewrite apparently is not making effect. It is placing the name of blog directly in the physical address, and not making the rewrite!

Somebody knows what I can make to correct this?

The Revolution is Here! Check Out the Revolution Wordpress Themes.

The Revolution Wordpress Themes are very powerful themes. They include a grouping of editable php files to customize. Configuring these templates is not easy, but can be well worth it for someone with above average technical ability…or a website owner who has access to technical support for customizing web themes and blog templates.

The Revolution City Template features a tabbed image function that lets you cycle through 6 different pictures utilizing a Flickr plugin. Although a little cumbersome utilizing the custom fields option…it will import a picture into the home page of the blog or website so that it can be attached to summary text…which is similar to an excerpt…however…shorter. The sidebar support is pretty flexible as there is one master and two sub sidebars.

Revolution Sports is an older theme…however, nice. It uses a Post Limit Plugin to do what Revolution City does via the WP files…so this can cause technical issues swapping from theme to theme if you are working with multiples. Without customization, this template gives a more masculine look. We also found it to behave friendlier with Javascript.

These can cause problems for those who are not used to editing php files…but the designer does offer some tutorial videos which come in quite handy. All in all…these are highly configurable, which is very flexible. They are great for a news type site or magazine. Keep in mind that these are not free themes…they costs about $79.00 or come in multi-license packs…which the developer sells.

The other themes are Revolution News, Magazine, Real Estate, Revolution Pro Media and Revolution Tech.

We are happy to work with you on configuring and customizing the Revolution Themes or Working With You to Fix any Problems.

Wordpress Hosting Comparison

Some hosting systems are better than others for Wordpress Hosting. Below are the companies that we suggest from our experiences on the internet…and the various reasons. These companies can be used for Wordpress Hosting or to manage a regular site. All are cPanel based hosts which allow for easy site management whether you are trying to figure out how to host a Wordpress blog or website or just move your regular website to something more dependable. We can do installs on these companies or others…but, if you are getting into putting together a new site, it is suggested to start with one of these. Please also read the section on what to look for in hosting below the specifications: We Did a Quick Check on the Shared Virtual Hosts Below Through Clients to See How Many Other Users Were Sharing the IP. Two of the Companies Below Offer a Dedicated IP, the Ones That Don’t Have the IP Number Share in the Specs.

ALL OF THESE WORDPRESS HOSTING COMPANIES ARE AFFORDABLE AND OFFER DIFFERENT BENEFITS

What to Look for in Hosting… If Your Site is Wordpress, Whether You’re One of Our Clients, Looking to Host WP or WPMU, You Should First Review the Wordpress Hosting Requirements. If You Are Just Looking for Robust Hosts Up With Current Technology Required for Web 2.0 Sites in Hopes of Expansion or Are Just Unhappy With Your Current Host…It Won’t be Necessary to Read This. All of the Space and Bandwidth Providers Above Do However Conform to the Current Requirements of WP…and Do a Nice Job at That. You Want a Site That Supports MySQL and PHP. A cPanel control panel system is not required, but preferred by most any professional working with new Web 2.0 websites and development. Just because a Company Has a “Control Panel,” Does Not Mean That it Has a Cpanel. A Dedicated Ip Number is Advantageous for Professionalism for Business Websites, but Sites on Shared IPs Function Just as Well in Most Cases. It is Harder to FInd a Dedicated Offering, So Pay Close Attention to the Suggestions of the Companies Above. The Suggestions Above are Based on What We Know Will Save You Money and Give You a Valuable and Reliable Hosting Account. You Might Find Otherwise That it Will be More Expensive to Get a Designer to Adapt to the Environment Offered by a Host Outside the Norm. We Can Often Work With Non-cPanel or Other Companies (Should You Have Paid in Advance) LAMP - Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP. This is an acronym for the popular operating, server, database and coding platform systems. This is the environment that WP is designed for and operates within.

Hosting Terms Explained

Virtual Host - A Non-Dedicated Server Arrangement, Usually With a Shared IP by Many Users.

IP - An IP Number is Basically Your Numerical Web Address on the Web for Your Website (in the case of a website). It Attaches to Your Domain Name by Use of a DNS or Domain Name Server…Often Referred to as a “Nameserver”

Dedicated IP - One IP Number Which is Dedicated to or Attached to a Specific Website (without sharing with the hosting companies other users. This is Often Shown as a Dedicated Server When Checking to See Who Owns a Website Through Whois Searches. It is Believed, However, Not Proven, That a Dedicated IP is Viewed Better by the Search Engines. It is Definitely the Most Professional Way to Host a Business Website.

Shared IP - This is When One Hosting Company Partitions an IP Number Between a Group of Users Rather Than Assigning a Dedicated Number.
